The exhibition Where Are We? opened at Maçka Sanat Galerisi on January 31, 2023, featuring the works of Akın Güreş, Ayşen Urfalıoğlu, Fatih Kızılcan, Fırat Engin, Füreya Koral, Güneş Çınar, Murat Germen, Mustafa Duymaz, Ömür Tokgöz, Rabia Seyhan, Rüçhan Şahinoğlu, and Yunus Çermik.

Maçka Sanat Galerisi invites viewers to explore their relationship with humanity and the urban world we have created. Within a consumption-driven world that glorifies Neolithic romanticism while normalizing apocalyptic scenarios, what are we, who are we? As we shift from being part of this world to merely observing and consuming it, we are prompted to ask: Where are we?

Is the city changing, transforming, or both? Under the shadows of forced migrations, population movements, and political or class-driven intentions, what has been lost? Are contemporary, relatively comfortable mass housing projects not the modern equivalent of shantytowns? From workers’ housing to skyscrapers and public buildings, urbanization has produced long-standing challenges, such as infrastructure failing to keep pace with population growth—issues repeated from generation to generation without resolution. The exhibition focuses on everything from degraded topography to ecosystem destruction, from planning reduced to an economic-political weapon, from identity to memory, from the human body and spirit to the destruction of animals, and from shifting sounds to smells, directing attention to the labyrinthine city in which we are increasingly lost—our home, our hearth, our environment.

In a city that turns the human into the universal, transforming the singular life we imagine for ourselves into just another, how willing and committed are we to take responsibility? Where were we, where have we come, where are we, and ultimately, where are we now?

By focusing on the evolving concept of the city over the past seventy years, Maçka Sanat Galerisi presents a group exhibition that leaves a lasting mark on our mental, emotional, and visual memory.
