Time Flows, the Ground Remains Rabia Seyhan

Time flows; spaces collapse, disappear, and are rebuilt. Yet memories of them remain vivid in the mind, and the ground — as a symbol of memory — continues to carry the traces of the past.

In her exhibition titled “Time Flows, the Ground Remains”, Rabia Seyhan explores the concept of space through the notions of construction, destruction, and memory. Space is not merely a physical entity; it is also a representation of memory shaped by human existence, layered with emotional, social, and historical dimensions. Every constructed structure inevitably succumbs to time and change — not only through physical decay but also as a result of wars, natural disasters, migration, population movements, urban policies, or redevelopment processes.

The memory of a demolished space may persist even after its physical disappearance, living on in the minds of those who once inhabited or surrounded it. The loss of a place to which meaningful bonds are attached evokes a sense of emptiness akin to the loss of a loved one. As symbols of periods of witnessing in life, such spatial losses can awaken feelings of resistance, anger, or protection — or, conversely, provoke a desire to erase memory altogether.

In this exhibition, Rabia Seyhan invites the viewer to contemplate how transforming spaces affect memory. By reconstructing the buildings that occupy her memory on the surface of the canvas, she observes the cyclical process of remembering, destruction, and rebuilding. From the perspective of space, she examines the transformation of time, architecture, and ways of living upon a ground that remains constant.
