Maçka Sanat Galerisi continues its tradition of merging architecture with art through its Traditional New Year Gathering, initiated with the gallery’s architect Mehmet Konuralp. Following last year’s collective exhibition “Christmas Tree Forest”, which featured 41 architects, designers, and artists curated by architect Ömer Selçuk Baz, this year the gallery presents “mââile” by architect Hakan Demirel, again as part of a collective exhibition project.
Invited to design the 2023 Christmas tree, Hakan Demirel created “mââile” by drawing inspiration from the idea of coming together—or not—during the holidays and sharing the space with his siblings, each active in different fields of contemporary art. Hamit Demirel’s installation “2002” occupies a niche in the main space, Haluk Demirel’s work “Let It Stay With Me”, Halit Demirel’s installation “Zerre” fills the entire space, and Hakan Demirel’s Christmas Tree, composed of 60 stainless steel mirrored pieces, forms a central gathering point. The mirrored surfaces of the tree fragment viewers’ reflections, as well as the surrounding works, breaking, dividing, and simultaneously recombining them in new ways.
The “mââile” exhibition by the Demirel siblings grows, expands, fragments, and recombines with each visitor, evoking the hope of coming together once more while celebrating the power of family and unity.
