Murat Germen


Murat Germen is an artist, educator, and archivist, born in 1965, who lives and works between Istanbul and London. Using photography as a tool for expression and research, he earned his Master’s degree in Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a Fulbright scholar, receiving the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Gold Medal. Germen has numerous publications—both print and online—on photography, architecture, planning, new media, and art, and he has been invited to speak at dozens of international conferences.

The focus of his artistic work includes the effects of over-urbanization and gentrification, property and dispossession, new forms and instruments of imperialism, participatory citizenship, urban rights, the sustainability of local cultures, human impact on nature, climate change, global warming, and water rights. He has published two monographs, with Skira (Italy) and MASA (Turkey). Germen has contributed to over eighty solo and group exhibitions in countries including Turkey, the United States, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Portugal, Uzbekistan, Greece, Japan, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Bulgaria, Iran, India, Australia, France, Canada, Bahrain, Korea, Dubai, China, Sweden, Switzerland, and Egypt.

More than 300 editions of his works are held in private and institutional collections in Turkey and abroad, including Istanbul Modern, Proje 4L Elgiz Contemporary Art Museum, Toruń Center for Contemporary Art (Poland), the Benetton Foundation’s Imago Mundi – Istanbul Codex, Yapý Kredi Culture & Art, Odunpazarý Modern Museum, and the Evliyagil Museum. Germen currently teaches photography, art, and new media at the Faculty of Art and Social Sciences at Sabancý University.
