Forty-eight Kerem Piker
As part of the “Traditional New Year’s Gathering” project, which Maçka Sanat Galerisi initiated to bring architecture and art together, this year’s featured architect is Kerem Piker.
The project, launched in collaboration with Maçka Sanat Galerisi’s architect Mehmet Konuralp, continued in 2022 with Ömer Selçuk Baz’s “Christmas Tree Forest,” in 2023 with Hakan Demirel’s “mââile,” and in 2024 with Kerem Piker’s “forty-eight.”
Architect Kerem Piker, noting that there is no escape from the three-dimensional grid dictated by the gallery’s 10x10 cm ceramic joints, based his design on the ancient ceramics that form the founding elements of the space, which opened in 1976.
This time, he transferred the past ceramic tiles onto next-generation porcelain ceramics 3 mm thick. In tribute to the gallery’s 48th anniversary, he used 48 tiles in each row, totaling twenty rows and 960 ceramics. To create an effect that tapers upward and allows the installation to stand without leaning on the gallery’s floor or walls, he used 1,100 connector pieces with sixty different geometries, produced with 3D printers, to hold the tiles together.
