Seyhun Topuz
Topuz, who graduated from the State Academy of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture in 1971, began working as an assistant in the same department. Between 1978 and 1980, he continued his studies in New York with sculptor Jose de Cree. He returned to New York later and, in the same year, held his first solo exhibition at Maçka Art Gallery. In subsequent years, he was invited to various group exhibitions and participated in the first Istanbul Biennial in 1987.
Later recognized with the Aydın Doğan Award, Seyhun Topuz predominantly uses primary colors in his works. The artist states, “We cannot assign as much meaning to sculpture as we do to painting; even if there are multifaceted references, they are embedded in the form and do not translate into words.” Rather than examining natural forms, his works produce geometric abstract images. Offering new propositions regarding the concept of space, these works focus on transforming the artist’s intellectual effort into form without adopting a narrative or illustrative approach.
